Mohammed Ben Sulayem hails discussions with Formula 1 drivers ahead of final meeting on 2026 regulations

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem hailed what he described as a constructive and collaborative discussion between the Formula 1 drivers and the governing body regarding changes to the 2026 regulations.

After massive criticism of the 2026 F1 regulations that have resulted in yo-yo racing and, more concerningly, safety issues, Formula One Management (FOM), the FIA, drivers, teams, and stakeholders in general have been engaged in discussions over the unexpected April break to find a way to improve the racing that has been dominated by energy management and harvesting rather than outright racing.

The 50G crash, Haas driver Oliver Bearman thankfully walked away from in the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, as earlier safety concerns have now materialized, which meant something needed to be done.

Ahead of a final meeting scheduled on Monday, April 20th, following a series of other meetings, Ben Sulayem expressed his satisfaction with the exchange that took place with the F1 drivers over the break in April imposed by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the war in the Middle East.

Ben Sulayem said on social media: "I am delighted to report that there has been constructive and collaborative discussion between the FIA and the Formula 1 drivers ahead of tomorrow's [Monday] CEO and Team Principals' meeting to discuss potential changes to the 2026 regulations.

"The drivers have provided invaluable input on adjustments which they feel should be made, particularly in the areas of energy management to ensure safe, fair, and competitive racing.

"The FIA has also held a series of meetings over the past few weeks with technical representatives from the teams, power unit manufacturers, and FOM to discuss proposed changes. Safety and the best interests of the sport are the main focus of these discussions.

"Following the meeting tomorrow [Monday], the final proposals will be put before an FIA WMSC e-vote," Ben Sulayem revealed in conclusion.
