Pirelli will bring the softest compounds in its 2026 range — the C3, C4 and C5 — to both Miami and Montreal, creating a rare back‑to‑back Sprint weekend pairing with identical tyre nominations.

The choice reflects the characteristics of two circuits that, despite their contrasting layouts, share low‑abrasion surfaces and demand strong mechanical grip under heavy braking.

Softest trio for a demanding stretch

For both events, the C3 will serve as the Hard, the C4 as the Medium, and the C5 as the Soft. It is the first time this season that the softest trio appears in consecutive rounds, and the decision comes at a moment when teams are already juggling compressed development cycles and the operational intensity of Sprint formats.

The Miami Grand Prix (1–3 May) marks Formula 1’s return after a month‑long hiatus caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. The temporary circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium features exceptionally smooth asphalt, allowing Pirelli to commit to the softest end of the spectrum without concerns over excessive wear.

Thermal degradation remains the primary challenge in Florida’s heat, but last year’s race demonstrated that the compounds — nominally unchanged for 2026 — held up well. With degradation limited, drivers were able to push aggressively in the early laps, producing extended wheel‑to‑wheel battles and a wider range of viable strategies.

Montreal also goes soft

Three weeks later, the Canadian Grand Prix (22–24 May) will use the same C3–C5 selection. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is traditionally low in abrasion, and its repeated heavy‑braking zones demand strong bite and stability from the tyres. The softer range helps deliver the necessary grip, particularly in the slow‑speed chicanes and the approach to the hairpin.

In 2025, when the range extended to C6, Pirelli nominated a trio that included that extra‑soft option. Even so, the then‑Soft compound played only a marginal role in race strategy, with teams favouring two‑stop approaches built around the Hard and Medium.

The 2026 selection is expected to behave similarly, though the earlier calendar slot introduces a greater risk of cool temperatures and unpredictable weather — a defining feature of Montreal in spring.
