George Russell fires warning shot to rivals after ‘challenging’ F1 Japanese GP

George Russell has fired a warning shot to Mercedes’ Formula 1 rivals as he looks to bounce back after losing ground to teammate Kimi Antonelli in China and Japan.
Russell and Mercedes have started 2026 in dominant fashion, the Silver Arrows winning the opening three rounds, comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
The Mercedes power unit is proving to be working well with its chassis, Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli engaged in the early stages of a title fight.
But Russell’s early season momentum after a dominant weekend in Australia began to unravel in China, losing ground to his young Italian rival.
A difficult weekend in Japan followed, the Briton finishing off the podium while Antonelli took his second successive victory.
But Russell remains undeterred, with an unwavering belief in the W17 package underlining a confidence for the rest of 2026.
“As a team, it’s been an amazing start to the year, and for me personally, it started off really, really well, but I had a challenging race in Japan,” Russell said to media, including Motorsport Week.
“But it is a hell of a long season, and the most important thing is that we’ve got a really good package beneath us, and I’m feeling good and confident.”

Russell then delivered a warning to rivals, that despite the extended break offering a chance for rivals to catch up to Mercedes, he believes the Silver Arrows will maintain its advantage.
“This small mini-break has been a really good reset, and I’m ready to go again, and for so long, we’ve had such an amazing group of engineers and designers and the previous set of rules, we just struggled to get on top of,” he said.
“But this new set of regulations, this new car, this new engine is more aligned to what we know as a team and probably suits our strengths.
“I think this belief of wanting to get Mercedes back on top as well has really propelled us to this point in time.”
Russell’s determination to overcome a difficult two races will be crucial in what looks to become a fledgling title fight.
Watching him act on this determination in Miami will be interesting, as he is signalling aggression as he seeks to return to winning ways.
