F2: Minì beats Ferrari juniors Beganovic and Camara to take maiden Formula 2 victory in …
By on

Gabriele Minì claimed his first FIA Formula 2 victory in a dramatic and attritional Miami Feature Race, prevailing in a late three‑way fight against Dino Beganovic and Rafael Câmara as changing conditions, repeated Safety Cars and strategic divergence shaped an unpredictable afternoon.

The MP Motorsport driver kept his composure through a race defined by interruptions and shifting momentum, capitalising on errors from both rivals in the closing laps to secure a breakthrough win.

After several formation laps behind the Safety Car due to the wet conditions, the race finally began with a standing start. Pole‑sitter Kush Maini launched cleanly to retain the lead, while Rafael Câmara’s wheelspin opened the door for Martinius Stenshorne to briefly take second.

Both, however, ran deep at Turn 1, allowing Minì to slip into third before Câmara recovered to retake the position at Turn 7, with teammate Joshua Duerksen following through into fourth.

Stenshorne’s early progress was undone almost immediately when he was handed a 10‑second stop‑and‑go penalty for a starting procedure infringement.

Moments later, the Safety Car was deployed after Championship leader Nikola Tsolov was eliminated in a Turn 1 collision with Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, the Thai driver later receiving a 10‑second penalty for the incident.

In the confusion that followed, drivers were instructed to pass through the pitlane, but Maini and Câmara continued down the main straight as the rest of the field peeled off.

Stenshorne emerged from the pitlane in second behind Maini, only to serve his penalty once racing resumed at the end of Lap 3, promoting the Invicta Racing pair of Câmara and Duerksen into second and third.

Incidents, Strategy Splits and a Race Reset

The restart brought more drama as Oliver Goethe suffered suspension damage after a snap at Turn 18 sent him into the barriers, triggering a Virtual Safety Car.

When racing resumed on Lap 6, Beganovic began his charge, overtaking Minì for fourth before quickly closing on Duerksen in the fight for second as Câmara slipped back from Maini.

Another major incident followed on Lap 9 when Alexander Dunne ran deep at Turn 17 and slid into the barriers, bringing out the Safety Car again.

Most of the field took the opportunity to make their mandatory pit stops, though Duerksen, Colton Herta and John Bennett stayed out, cycling into the top three. A delay for Maini in the pitlane allowed Câmara to rejoin ahead of him.

With the race now running to time, Duerksen executed a strong restart, but the pack behind reshuffled rapidly. Beganovic passed Maini for fifth, Noel León dived past the Indian driver at Turn 17, and Minì followed through to take seventh.

Further back, contact between Nico Varrone and Stenshorne eliminated the Norwegian and brought out yet another Safety Car, with Varrone later penalised.

Duerksen, Herta and Bennett finally made their mandatory stops under the caution, handing the race lead to Câmara ahead of Beganovic and León.

A Three‑Way duel for victory

The decisive phase began with 16 minutes remaining. Câmara held the lead but was immediately under pressure from Beganovic, who forced the Brazilian into a mistake at Turn 11. Câmara held on, but the fight allowed Minì—now up to third after a bold move on León at Turn 16—to close in.

A Virtual Safety Car, quickly upgraded to a full Safety Car, set up a five‑minute sprint to the finish. On a rapidly drying track, the wet tyres overheated and grip became inconsistent, turning the final laps into a test of precision and restraint.

With just over a minute remaining, Beganovic attacked Câmara into Turn 17. Both ran off the circuit, but the Swede rejoined ahead to take the lead. Câmara attempted an immediate counter‑attack at Turn 1 but ran wide again, allowing Minì to seize second.

The Italian then pressured Beganovic into a mistake at Turn 11. The pair ran side‑by‑side through the chicane, with Beganovic cutting across and emerging ahead, but another wide moment at Turn 17 finally opened the door. Minì swept through to take the lead as the final lap began and never looked back.

Despite intense pressure from both Beganovic and Câmara, Minì held firm to secure his maiden Formula 2 victory. Beganovic finished second, with Câmara completing the podium after a race in which all three had led at various stages.

Behind them, León delivered a strong drive to fourth for Campos Racing, ahead of Maini, Ritomo Miyata, Mari Boya, Herta, Sebastián Montoya and Duerksen, who salvaged a point after leading earlier in the race.
