Red Bull debuts copy of Ferrari ‘Macarena’ rear wing at F1 Miami Grand Prix

Red Bull has debuted its own version of Ferrari’s innovative flipping ‘Macarena’ rear wing at Formula 1’s Miami Grand Prix.
Ferrari grabbed headlines during pre-season testing in Bahrain when it first revealed its unique rear wing design, which rotates at the end of straights to help reduce drag.
The upside-down rear wing made its first race weekend appearance at the Chinese Grand Prix, but Ferrari reverted to its more traditional rear wing design after debuting it in first practice.
Red Bull was rumoured to have developed a copy of the design originally introduced by Ferrari, having been spotted running it during a private test at Silverstone during F1’s enforced five-week break.
The Milton Keynes based outfit has indeed brought the rear wing to Miami as part of a raft of updates to its RB22, with the device seen being used for the first time during FP1.
Red Bull’s version has caused a stir due to how big the rear wing is, and specifically, the actuator.

“Red Bull have 'outmacarenad' the Ferrari rear wing," Sky Sports F1 pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz said. "We saw the spy spots at Silverstone but we didn’t really believe it.
“When I saw the size of the actuator that’s making that wing flip up and giving the huge drag reduction opportunity. That rear wing is opening much more than the Ferrari, and even the Alpine.
“When I saw that actuator, I got a little bit excited. Now we see it on track, I’m thoroughly thrilled about it. They actually downplay it, in saying that the revise rear wing attachments for the mechanism deploy straight line mode just allows more travel.
“Well, you can say that again! It allows one heck of amount of travel. So great stuff from Red Bull Racing. Let’s see if they can do what Ferrari couldn’t do, and make it reliable and get it to race this weekend. It looks good so far.”
2009 world champion Jenson Button was also impressed, noting: “It seems a lot faster than Ferrari’s.”
Red Bull’s package seems to include a mini wing on the exhaust that has taken inspiration from another Ferrari innovation.
Ferrari was testing an updated version of its own ‘Macarena’ rear wing during a filming day run at Monza last month.
The Scuderia appears to have brought an all-new version to Miami.
