FIA stewards issue Max Verstappen Miami F1 pitlane exit verdict

Max Verstappen has been handed a five-second post-race time penalty for crossing the pit exit line during the Miami Grand Prix.

The four-time world champion was flagged for potentially crossing the exit line after making his one and only pit stop during Sunday's race, but the stewards did not investigate the incident until after the chequered flag.

They put this down to having limited video evidence in order to make a clear decision on whether an infringement had occurred at the time.

New angles revealed that Verstappen did in fact cross the outside of the white pit exit line and violated the regulations.

As such, the Red Bull driver was handed a five-second time penalty.

However, the punishment does not change Verstappen's result, who keeps fifth place due to finishing nearly nine seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari.

George Russell was also looked at for making contact with Verstappen during their final lap battle but the Mercedes driver was cleared over any wrongdoing.

This was because both drivers and the stewards all agreed it was a "minor racing incident".

What the stewards said

"When the incident occurred there was limited video evidence to make a clear decision on whether an infringement had occurred," the stewards noted in their report.

"We therefore decided to investigate the incident after the race, to see if we could get better video evidence of the incident in the meantime, perhaps from other angles.

"We were able to do so. The new angles did show more views of the pit exit line and the incident in question. The driver of Car 3 explained that he was driving out of the pit exit and rejoined the race under full course yellow.

"The Stewards determined that the outside of the front left-hand tyre did cross the outside of the solid white pit exit line in violation of Appendix L, Chapter IV Article 6 c) of the International Sporting Code. Given the nature of the infraction the Stewards elected to impose a penalty of 5 seconds."
