‘All on me’ – Charles Leclerc scolds his “very poor decision” in F1 Miami GP

Charles Leclerc has put the blame squarely on himself for throwing away a potential podium finish during a chaotic end to Formula 1’s Miami Grand Prix.

The Monegasque looked to be on course to claim third place but lost out to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in a dramatic penultimate lap battle after a series of errors.

Having tactically allowed Piastri through at the final corner in an attempt to immediately repass the Australian with the aid of the Overtake mode, Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at Turn 1 and suffered a wild spin.

Leclerc tapped the wall as he recovered and caused damage to his front-left steering arm, which enabled Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to sneak by on the final lap as he slumped to sixth.

After the race, Leclerc lambasted himself for putting “a very strong race in the bin” with his “very poor” decision-making.

“It’s all on me and I don’t have much to add other than that,” Leclerc told Sky Sports F1.

“I’m very disappointed with my mistake, it shouldn’t happen. I pushed very hard in the second to last lap, I thought it was a good idea to let Oscar go for me to get the Overtake, I knew it was going to be very difficult to stay in front otherwise.

“It was a very poor decision and in the space of four corners I put a very strong race in the bin, so I’m very frustrated about that. Not much more to say.”

To rub salt into the wounds, Leclerc faces investigations for three potential offences that could lead to him being penalised.

Leclerc is under investigation for leaving the track multiple times on the last lap and gaining an advantage, for driving his car in an “unsafe condition” on the last lap, and for tagging Russell when they made minor contact.

“I don’t know what will be the decision, I guess we will have to wait and see,” Leclerc said of the investigations.

“The thing I can say is I did my best to try and make the corners first of all and it was probably a lot more difficult from what it looked from the outside.”
