Miami Grand Prix: Kimi Antonelli fends off Lando Norris to deliver hat rick of wins

Kimi Antonelli took his third consecutive Formula 1 win at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix fending off a late charge from Lando Norris who had to settle for second.
Antonelli started the race from pole, but once again had a bad launch off the line with second-starting Max Verstappen going ahead of him, but then Charles Leclerc came charging from third fighting the Dutchman for the lead as Lando Norris also fancied his chances.
Antonelli locked up and ran wide while Verstappen then spun on the kerbs trying to defend from Leclerc but managed to return his car on track pointed in the right direction with some driving acrobatics and while he was lucky not to be collected by the starting pack, he dropped to ninth. From there he was out of contention.
From there on Leclerc led with Antonelli chasing him as Norris was third with Oscar Piastri, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, Verstappen, and Alex Albon completing the top ten.
From there on, Antonelli tried to pass Leclerc with Norris closely behind biding his time. The reigning F1 Champion then makes a move on Antonelli and makes it stick on Lap 6 just when the Safety Car was sent out after two incidents on track.
Pierre Gasly tried to pass Lawson on the outside of T17, the Kiwi defended hard with a late brake hitting the Frenchman and sent him into the barriers as the Alpine flipped over.
Isack Hadjar started from the pitlane after taking extra PU elements, a strategic decision following his disqualification from Qualifying.
The Frenchman took too much kerb at the Turn 14/15 chicane and went straight into the barriers. Game over.
With the Safety Car out, the casualties were Nico Hulkenberg who retired first and was soon joined by Gasly, Lawson, and Hadjar.
Verstappen was the only driver to pit under the Safety Car and took on the Hard tyres, dropping to 16th after which he started a masterful drive up the order, leading the race at one point, but then started dropping like a stone as his tyres aged and was passed easily.
In the end he managed to finish fifth capitalizing on an error from Leclerc who spun when he was fighting with Piastri.
Going back to the fight at the lead, Leclerc led on after the Safety Car but was soon passed by Norris for the lead as Antonelli soon followed suit after some yoyo racing.
By then, some engineers were warning their drivers about the rain which only messed with the teams' strategists brains all race long without even coming in.
On Lap 21, Mercedes pulled the trigger, calling Russell into the pits which was a bit strange with all the talk about the rain, but it seemed Mercedes' weather radar was spot on.
Leclerc pitted one lap after that to cover Russell but has a slow stop and rejoined behind the Briton.
From there on, Russell and Leclerc starting climbing up the order as Norris who was leading and Antonelli, in second, took their time and pitted after each other.
While Norris managed to emerge ahead of Antonelli, the later managed to pass him immediately in what proved to be a decisive pass.
From there Norris tried everything to pass Antonelli but couldn't and had to settle for second as the Italian took the win who seemed to be nursing a gearbox issue while also striking twice on track limits.
As Antonelli and Norris slugged it out in the lead, Leclerc, Russell and Piastri were all passing Verstappen on old tyres and each targeting the final step of the podium.
And it appeared it was going to be Leclerc's but then Piastri passed him and the Monegasque had a huge spin trying to chase the Australian to retake the place which put him on the back foot.
Behind the top three

Russell soon passed Leclerc after passing Verstappen who duly passed the #16 Ferrari.
Piastri ultimately took third with Russell fourth and Verstappen fifth as Leclerc's error proved costly.
Leclerc ultimately finished in sixth place ahead of Hamilton who had a lonely race to seventh.
Franco Colapinto had a decent weekend in Miami, outpacing his teammate and driving a decent race to finish eighth, picking his fights wisely while simply focusing on the ultimate target of scoring points.
Carlos Sainz and Albon completed the top ten for Williams who leave Miami with a double-points-finish which should serve as a boost for the team who have had a horrendous start to the season so far.
The stewards will have a busy after-race with Leclerc under investigation for driving his car in an unsafe condition.
Verstappen ad Russell will also be investigated for their contact in Turn 1 as they yoyo'd for position while the former will also be investigated for crossing the white line while exiting the pits.
What the top three said

Speaking after the race, Antonelli said: "The start was not as bad as yesterday, it was a bit better. I didn't expect Charles to brake that early, so to avoid him I locked up.
"I was a bit lucky with what happened in Turn Two (with Verstappen spinning, then I did a little mistake with the energy management, trying to overtake Charles, then I lost a place to Lando.
"Then the pace was strong. I was able to stay close. The team did a great strategy. We did a massive undercut and we managed to bring it home even though it was not easy."
Antonelli became the first F1 driver to convert his first three pole positions into wins, he commented: "This is just the beginning. The road is still long. We are working super hard and the team is doing an incredible job.
"Without them, I wouldn't be here, so thanks to them and my family. I'm going to enjoy this one then get back to work," the Mercedes youngster concluded.
Norris was gutted for missing out on the win, he said: "A mixed bag, really.
"We just got undercut - no excuses other than that. We got undercut, we should have boxed first. Kimi did a good job. Hat's off to Merc and Kimi, they drove a good race.
"Easy to make mistakes out there with the big braking zones and with these cars but he didn't make any big enough for me to capitalize on. So I have to be happy, I think as a team I think we have to be happy.
"I'm gutted to miss out on a win here in Miami, I think it was possible today. But not the pace to get past him in the end, so we take it on the chin. But it's still a positive weekend all together," the 2025 F1 Champion concluded.
His teammate, Piastri, who did well to recover and finish third added: "It’s not been the most straightforward of weekends.
"Qualifying yesterday was a bit messy for both of us, but the pace seemed more encouraging today.
“I had to make a few overtakes at the end of the race. It was a pretty late charge, but it’s very tricky around here, especially in these conditions, so thanks to the team.
“Clearly we are a step closer in performance once again, so that’s nice to see," the Aussie pointed out.“This weekend we showed if we get track position we can hang on to things well.
"We were close in Japan, but we’ve definitely taken a step forward and hopefully in Canada we can take another step forward again.
“Excited for the future," Piastri concluded.
