Fernando Alonso linked with sensational 2027 return to Alpine – reports

Fernando Alonso has been linked with a sensational return to Alpine for the 2027 Formula 1 season as the Spaniard continues to struggle at Aston Martin.
Signing for Aston Martin in 2022, Alonso joined the Silverstone team on a wave of optimism, as Lawrence Stroll targeted podiums and championships.
His first year saw dramatic promise, scoring eight podiums, proving to be the closest challenger to the all-conquering package of Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
This however, proved to be the highlight of Alonso’s time at the team, as Aston Martin fell backwards in 2024 and 2025, unable to reach the competitive heights of 2023.
But hope remained for Alonso and the team to take a competitive step forward in 2026, with the arrival of Adrian Newey last season and the return of Honda as an exclusive works power unit partner.
But pre-season testing indicated a disaster looming, with the combination of shortfalls with the AMR26 chassis and extreme vibrations from Honda’s power unit relegating the Spaniard to the back of the grid.

Is Fernando Alonso heading back to Alpine?
According to reports from Planet F1, Alonso’s patience has now snapped, and is rumoured to be heading back to Alpine on a one year deal.
Alpine Executive Advisor and long time friend Flavio Briatore is said to be the mastermind behind the move, which would see Alonso return to the team he raced on three separate occasions, and winning two championships with.
Out of contract at the end of the year, Alonso is a free agent at the end of this year, and could be tempted by Gucci’s massive investment into the team.
A sensational move back to Alpine could have moved one step closer in Barcelona, after he qualified last for his home race that he has won twice before.
That will result will have hurt him. But his history of jumping ship at the wrong time has followed Alonso through his career. The grass may not be greener on the other side.
