Last year, Spain threw up a cracker of a race, which ultimately could be viewed as having cost Verstappen the title after he intentionally drove into the side of Russell's Mercedes. Out of the championship picture at the time, his late-season resurgence saw him narrowly miss out on the crown, ironically, by fewer points than he dropped with his Spanish penalty.

Pit lane opens

The drivers are now out on the track, with the pit lane open for the laps to the grid.

The action so far this weekend has been slightly lacking, but with rapidly degrading tyres and very high temperatures, things could get very interesting across the coming two hours or so.

Good afternoon and welcome to Barcelona for race day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Russell starts from pole with Hamilton alongside for the first time as a Ferrari driver. Antonelli is third, with the McLaren and Red Bull pairings close behind.
